Hindus want pilot “yoga replacing detention” program extended to all Denver Public Schools

NewsPatrolling.com :Hindus have commended Doull Elementary School (DES) in Denver for reportedly trading detention with yoga, and are urging Denver Public Schools (DPS) to expand it to all its 207 schools. 

Calling it a step in the positive direction, distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, complimented DPS and DES for coming forward and providing an opportunity to students to avail the multiple benefits yoga provided. 

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, urged DPS Board of Education headed by Anne Rowe and Superintendent Tom Boasberg to work towards broadening this yoga program to cover all the DPS schools, thus incorporating highly beneficial yoga in the lives of all the about 92,331 K12 students of City and County of Denver. 

The funding for this yoga initiative came from $100,000 grant from DPS out of voter-approved mill levy, and is meant to be used to support the social and emotional learning of students, reports suggest. 

Yoga, referred as “a living fossil”, was a mental and physical discipline, for everybody to share and benefit from, whose traces went back to around 2,000 BCE to Indus Valley civilization, Rajan Zed pointed out. 

Zed further said that yoga, although introduced and nourished by Hinduism, was a world heritage and liberation powerhouse to be utilized by all. According to Patanjali who codified it in Yoga Sutra, yoga was a methodical effort to attain perfection, through the control of the different elements of human nature, physical and psychical. 

According to US National Institutes of Health; yoga may help one to feel more relaxed, be more flexible, improve posture, breathe deeply, and get rid of stress. According to “2016 Yoga in America Study”, about 37 million Americans (which included many celebrities) now practice yoga; and yoga is strongly correlated with having a positive self image.  Yoga was the repository of something basic in the human soul and psyche, Rajan Zed added. 

DPS, lead by an all women Board, claims to be “one of the best urban school systems in the country”. Goals of DPS, whose roots can be traced to 1859, include “Support for the Whole Child”; and Lakota language is taught here. Jodie Carrigan is the Principal of DES, which has a “Yoga Club” and whose “students are ranked among the happiest in DPS”.

Today’s Allied Activities

Due to Holi festival on 2 March 2018, no play was scheduled on that day. Therefore, there was no ‘Meet the Director’ session held today.

Students of 4 colleges out of 60 colleges of Delhi presented their plays under the umbrella of “Advitiya”, a segment for the young talents during the 8th Theatre Olympics.

• Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology: The play ‘De Taali’ leaves a question mark on us – the ones who chose their fate, based on the gender they chose and challenges the liberty we take to define the limits of their lives.
• Sri Aurobindo College: The play ‘Atithi Bhava’ focuses on bringing forward the true story behind the distorted history to restore our belief on the motherland we thrive upon.
• Gobind Ballabh Pant Engineering College: ‘20’ showcases how an individual loses his/her identity when they erect their leader. The division done on the basis of religion which causes conflict within mankind.
• Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College: “Surname” narrates the quest to find our individual identities, free from the shadows of our family name. The play focuses on how we should stop viewing fathers as giving trees and acknowledge them as dads.  

The zest for life prevailing among the people of Haryana was wonderfully displayed through various dance forms on the stage of 8th Theatre Olympics 2018. The dancers from Haryana performed the regional dance of ‘Phaag’, which is a seasonal dance form of the farmers usually performed in the month of ‘Phalgun’. The dance involved men and women wearing colourful traditional clothes, moving on the beats of ‘Tasha’, ‘Nagada’, and ‘Dhol’. The folk dance of ‘Ghoomar’ was also performed by women dancers which added to the joy and jubilation among the audience.

Strong partners: bauma CONEXPO INDIA and iCEMA sign a Cooperation Agreement

bauma CONEXPO INDIA, International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines and Construction Vehicles, and iCEMA, the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers’ Association, will cooperate closely in future. A corresponding Cooperation Agreement was signed in Delhi at the start of August by Bhupinder Singh (CEO of bC Expo India) and Arvind K. Garg (President of iCEMA). The cooperation between the two partners underlines the great importance of bauma CONEXPO INDIA and makes it the most important event for the construction machinery industry in northern India.

By signing the Agreement, iCEMA has now become an official 'Partner Association’ of bauma CONEXPO INDIA. The partnership will run until 2020. Brett Lee urges parents to get their children screened early for hearing loss

Hearing screening at birth crucial for timely treatment, helps children grow up on par with their hearing peers

Key Highlights of the survey:

• 84.1% agreed children should be tested for hearing loss at birth; only 38.9% had their babies screened
• Three in 10 mothers surveyed were not sure if children with hearing loss were able to hear again or lead a normal life
• 75.6% Indian moms agree that hearing loss has less impact when treated early

New Delhi, March 1, 2018: Most mothers (84.1%) believed that children should be tested for hearing loss at birth, but few (38.9%) actually had their child screened, found a survey by Cochlear India and First Moms Club. These findings show that while mothers are well aware of the need to detect hearing loss early in childhood, they are not fully aware of what they must do or where they can go to get their children screened. The Cochlear India survey was conducted with First Moms Club in the lead up to World Hearing Day (March 3^rd) to find out how much Indian mothers knew about hearing loss in children.

An estimated 5-6 of every 1000 newborns suffer from some degree of hearing loss in India[i], but few parents

are able to recognize signs or know how to seek treatment. This delays diagnosis well after the critical period of intervention.

Dr. Milind Kirtane, Senior ENT Consultant and Cochlear Implant Surgeon, PD Hinduja Hospital, Saifee Hospital and SRCC Mumbai, said, “Countries that have made newborn hearing screening mandatory are able to take corrective measures in children as young as 6 months of age. It is very encouraging to see the Kerala government push for universal newborn hearing screening and I sincerely hope the same happens countrywide. This must become our national priority.”

So far, Kerala is the first state in the country to provide hearing screening for children in all government centres. The Kerala Social Security Mission developed a tablet/computer-based data management software where real time data of newborn screening can be recorded and shared with other institutions such as District Early Intervention Centers (DEICs) and medical colleges. Additionally, measures have been undertaken to ensure follow up and tracking in Anganwadies and schools. 

Mr. Brett Lee, Former Australian Cricketer and Cochlear’s Global Hearing Ambassador, commented, “All too often, we take little things for granted such as how much hearing matters. It was a big wake up call for me when my son was diagnosed with hearing loss at the young age of 5. We were fortunate enough to restore his hearing, but what about the millions of children who suffer with the condition every day? Early screening for hearing loss can ensure that children are diagnosed and treated early, allowing them to grow up into well adjusted adults.”

Three in 10 mothers surveyed were not sure if children with hearing loss were able to hear again or lead a normal life. The earlier a child is tested, diagnosed and treated for hearing loss, greater the chances of realizing his or her full potential. Research[ii] shows that children identified with hearing loss who get early intervention can develop language (spoken and/or signed) skills on par with their peers with normal hearing. These children are able to attend mainstream schools, communicate with their teachers and classmates, make new friends and feel confident in a world full of sound.

Cochlear is supporting the call for action on hearing loss with its “Hearing Matters” awareness campaign. “Hearing Matters” urges everyone, especially parents, to learn more about hearing loss in children so they know what signs to look out for and determine if their child may need a hearing evaluation. Any parent that is concerned about their child’s hearing should seek the help of a healthcare professional, as there are many opportunities for treatment and care.
